Confusion over host_framerate
Thursday, 18th September 1997 by Anthony
If you read that the wrong way, you might think we'd used the
host_framerate
slow-motion cheat to record our
demos. Let's be clear about this: though the films are supposed to be
entertaining, they are also meant as documents of serious
speed-running too. All the demos were recorded entirely honestly, with
no cheating whatsoever. This is real people playing 100% real
Quake. (Well, apart from the fictional intro sequence, of course. And
I still have trouble believing Perkele is only
human. :) )
We did use host_framerate
as a playback effect
at a few points in the demo - once in the intro sequence and later on
to help prevent the engine from misreading demo times on slower
machines. Here are the technical details.
We did ask sCary if he'd clarify at source, but it looks like the
request has got overlooked (well, he's a busy guy who never sleeps,
right? :) ), so thought it best to set matters straight here.

and mirrors when they were
picked up from PlanetQuake just after it had disconnected
mid-download. Dweomer got things working again like the star he is,
and proper versions (with a fix to a continuity bug in END) are back
in place now. Apologies if you downloaded anything broken in the
meanwhile.
