Speed Beyond Belief Lite II is a collection of demos recorded by Jozsef Szalontai for Matthias Worch's excellent and popular Quake episode, Beyond Belief, going through the levels as fast as possible on easy skill. Like with QdQ projects, the runs are in proper continuity but were recorded one level at a time. We do not expect every demo to be completely optimised, some maps still have some room for improvement - the only certainty in speed-running is that you can always do it faster somehow. (-: If you think you can beat any of the demos in this pack, go ahead and try, and send us your demo if you succeed. Make sure you use BBStats to start with the same stats we started with, and also check out our improvements page to see if any maps have been run faster after this release. You can also submit single level demos to the Speed Demos Archive . (1.2) Why this name? How did we come up with the name "Speed Beyond Belief Lite II"? Isn't that taking the mouth a bit too full? Well, we lack creativity. 'Beyond Belief' seems important, doesn't it? Doh! 'Speed' means that this is a collections of speedruns. 'Lite' means that the demos were recorded on easy skill and '2' means it's a sequel to Evan and Gunnar's run through bbelief [http://www.halcyon.com/draven/bblite]. There's a lot that goes into a name! (1.3) About Beyond Belief Beyond Belief is a free add-on for Quake released in 1997 by Matthias Worch (langsuyar@ocrana.de). It features a new episode consisting of eight levels (plus one start level) that aim at recreating the feel of Quake's episode one, as Matthias put it. To this day, Beyond Belief is renowned as one of the best single-player add-ons for Quake, and its fame eventually earned its author a job in the FPS industry. Beyond Belief's homepage is at the following URL: (2) The demos (2.1) Installation In order to watch SBBlite II you need to have the following things: * Quake.exe - v1.08. Older versions tend to crash in the menu map. * The registered version of Quake. You need to find your main Quake directory first (the one containing the Quake executable). If you choose to use GlQuake, version 0.98 must be used because some of the refilms use FOV commands that 0.97 cannot cope with. You can get GlQuake 0.98 at . Your copy of Beyond Belief should reside in a subdirectory of this main directory. For the purposes of these instructions we will assume you have called it "bbelief". Un(d)zip the contents of sbblite2.dz into this subdirectory, and you're done. No really, it is that simple. (2.2) SCBB and SBBlite II If you previously downloaded and watched "Speed Beyond Belief" (by QdQ) or "Speed Beyond Belief lite" (by D&M), or "Speed Completely Beyond Belief" (by QdQ) you may need to move these files temporarily out of your bbelief directory, if there are conflicts. (2.3) Running the demos * DOS/Windows users: SBBlite II includes a batch file named sbblite2.bat. Runnning this file lets you select a few options and will start the package. In particular, you can select whether you want to run normal Quake, WinQuake, or GLQuake (if available) to watch the demos. * Linux users: Sorry, I didn't have the time to write a similarly comfortable script for you. I'm sure you're competent enough to get the demos running anyway :-) You should rename sbblite2.pak to the lowest free pak number in the bbelief directory (most likely, that's pak1.pak). Then run Quake with the option "-game bbelief". * Macintosh users: Rename the .pak files as described in the Linux section, then start Quake whilst holding the option key. When you're asked for additional arguments, enter "-game bbelief". Once you're in the game you'll see a menu that lets you choose whether to play the movie, or the first person perspective, and whether you wish to see comments before each of the demos. Everything in the menu should be mostly self-explanatory! There are just two additional keys you should know about: If you are playing a sequence of levels, then you can press F9 to advance to the next level. F10 will abort playback and return you to the menu map. Anything else you need to know? No, there are no easter-eggs, sorry :-( (2.4) Known playback problems The menus will crash at 200 height resolutions (320x200 and 360x200) under DOS- and Winquake. We're very sorry about this, please try to use 320x240 or higher resolutions instead. Thank you. (3) More details about the demo (3.1) Timing Just a quick explanation of why we say we completed Beyond Belief in 2:20. We recorded every demo separately and then connected them together, adding the times for the individual levels. The time spent on the start level is not considered in this calculation. (3.2) How the run was recorded We recorded each demo separately, on skill 0 (Easy), of course without any cheating. To start with the correct stats we ended the previous level with, we used a QuakeC patch that allowed us to select the statistics we started with. You can get this patch from our homepage, go to . We recorded the episode as one big run because it was made to be played all levels in a row, and not as separate levels. There are few weapons in the higher levels, because you should have them already from previous ones. And we did it by connecting single demos together because the final product is a lot more interesting that way and entertaining, and we could include more tricks and better playing that we couldn't do had we recorded it in one sitting. (3.3) How the run was made into a movie The utility to refilm demos from a camera perspective is ReMaic . Some of the models from the DeathMatch Extension mod were used and patch in with a utility written by Stefan Schwoon, to show which weapon the player is holding. (4) Statistics "Saved" times are compared to the predecessor "Speed Beyond Belief Lite" run in 3:02 . ------------------------------------------------- Level Map Time Saved ------------------------------------------------- Mission Control BBelief1 0:14 0:04 The Cleanse BBelief2 0:15 0:04 Another fine Mess... BBelief3 0:46 0:09 Hell's Sewers BBelief4 0:11 0:11 The Lava Grounds BBelief5 0:14 0:03 Seal of Secrecy BBelief6 0:31 0:13 The Unholy Alliance BBelief7 0:09 -0:01 ------------------------------------------------- Total for Beyond Belief 2:20 0:43 ------------------------------------------------- The reason why BBelief7 is 1 second slower than the previous record is because we picked up the Rune in this last level, since we felt the project unfinished without that Rune and it was also the key of the Story. (5) Credits and contact info (5.1) Credits Speed Beyond Belief Lite II was created by the following team: Jozsef Szalontai running, menu, refilming, 90% of this whole production Amrik Kochhar editing, additional help Stefan Schwoon Making DME patch, post production Attila Csernyik Menu skeleton code, hints, tips, intro music Additional thanks and credits are due to the following people: * Matthias Worch of course, for creating Beyond Belief * Thomas Stubgaard * Martin Selinus (5.2) Utilities used The utilities we used included: LMPC by Uwe Girlich for decompiling and recompiling demos so we could use the convenient LS format. Also Uwe's DEM specs were very useful for us in creating our own tools. His other utility DemCut came in handy too. DemTool by Stefan Schwoon to do 90.23941% of the editing needed to make such a run. A little program made also by Stefan to add the viewable weapon models into the refilmed demos. BBstats and DemoRelise (unreleased) were used to make demos that fit into a continuous run. ProQCC to produce a modified progs.dat for handling the menu and demo playback. ReMaic by Anthony Bailey to reshoot an existing movie, altering it's camera. And finally, a lab-monkey we found lying on the street. Can't remember what it was for, but it was rather funny when Jozsef stuck it in his computer and it blew up :-) (5.3) Sounds used Here's a small list of the few ambient music stuff we used in the project: -The first intro music was done by Attila Csernyik (thanks again, Ati :-) -The second intro music is a part from one of the Quake2 music tracks (Id software) -The music in the credits demo is a part from "Trust?" by Limp Bizkit (5.4) Contact info For QdQ news and future projects check our page at At the time of writing, the next releases should be: Quake done 100% Quick Lite 2 * A speed-run through Quake on Easy skill, getting all kills and secrets The Rabbit Run (movie version) * A run of Quake on Easy skill, the fastest run through Quake yet. For questions and comments (even if you just want to say you liked the demos), email . Please send your questions/comments, all of them are valuable to us!
