You live in (city & country)?
West Milford, New Jersey, USA

Your birthdate (or age)?
April 4th 1989

Your occupation/job/studies?
As of writing this (May 9th 2006), I am a junior in high school.

Your hobbies?
Mostly computer-related. I do play some golf every once in a while.

Your email/icq/mirc/homepage?
navigatorthe@intergate.com
www.geocities.com/navigatorthe

Your music taste?
Too varied to write here. I suppose Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd, and
Metallica are worth mentioning.

Anything you want to add here (about yourself)?

www.geocities.com/navigatorthe/QdQD2.zip
www.geocities.com/navigatorthe/tricks.zip

(Yes, I know these links are not really about me, but since I have not made a whole lot of demos, these should satisfy anyone wanting to see how I speedrun.)

Quake-related Information

Your nickname (story behind it)?
the|navigator
I created it in 1997 for a UNIX login name ("navi").

Your Quake config (key bindings, etc.)?
bind uparrow "+forward"
bind downarrow "+back"
bind leftarrow "+moveleft"
bind rightarrow "+moveright"
bind mouse1 "+attack"
bind mouse2 "+strafe"
bind ins "impulse 4; wait; impulse 5"
bind del "impulse 2; wait; impulse 3"
bind end "impulse 6; wait; impulse 7"
bind / "impulse 10"
m_filter 1
+mlook

Size of Quake directory on your HD?
Only 180MB at the moment with some demos. I have arena/, Fortress/, Id1/, Kill/, Qw/, Reaper/, and run/, which is my Quake speedrunning directory. It has 11.4MB of demos in it right now. I really do not keep any demos on my hard drive. Any demos that I really like I have probably watched enough times already.

Your computer (processor/videocard etc.)?
I have three computers with Quake on it:

Intel Pentium I 200 MHz
48 MB RAM
S3 Virge 2MB
3Dfx Voodoo II 12MB

Intel Pentium III 733 MHz
512 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 7000 64MB
3Dfx Voodoo II 12MB

Intel Pentium IV 1800 MHz
512 MB RAM
NVidia Geforce III Ti 500 64MB

I almost always play Quake on the 733 MHz one, since the 3Dfx card and (somewhat) fast processor makes Quake smooth. Also, that is the computer I have a good mouse and mousepad on.

Quake settings (resolution, version etc.)?
GLQuake.exe 0.97
640x480x16
r_wateralpha 1
r_mirroralpha 1
r_shadows 0
(Standard settings, basically.)

First contact to speedrunning (when, how etc.)?
I played Quake since it came out in 1996. I have played QuakeWorld and Team Fortress for many years. Since about early 2003, I have noticed people traveling at abnormally fast speeds. I almost accused someone of cheating on 2fort5.bsp when I saw them hopping around really fast. I learned of bunnyhopping by that time. Soon after, I wanted to learn how to bunnyhop myself. For some reason, I tried so hard, spectated all kinds of players, and I just could not learn how to bunnyhop. I finally saw a bunnyhopping tutorial from www.planetmegatf.com and began to finally learn how to bunnyhop myself around December of 2004. Somewhere in the middle of the month (do not ask me how I remember this), I downloaded QdQwav off of FilePlanet. Since I knew what bunnyhopping was, I was able to appreciate the skill. I was in awe at the entire speedrun. I watched it over and over again, eventually attempting some speedruns myself. I think E4M5 on nightmare was the first demo I tried to speedrun. I started to become interested in Quake speedrunning. I would speedrun once or twice in a week, but I still liked mostly playing QuakeWorld. I found SDA and downloaded a few from scratch runs. I was still blown away and, at the same time, inspired by these demos. I joined #qdq on QuakeNet for the first time around June of 2005. When the competition "Boost like a Man(slay)" was announced, I could not keep my hands off this opportunity to start speedrunning at SDA (especially since I was really good at Team Fortress rocket jumping maps). Even though my fastest contest demo did not get in SDA's mailbox, I was still surprised at how I ranked. At this point in time, speedrunning was all I did in Quake. I really do not play QuakeWorld anymore. I occasionally do visit some of the old servers every once in a while just for a decent frag.

First speedrunning demo?
My contest entry for "Boost like a Man(slay)" was probably my first. My first actual demo is a nightmare marathon run of Terra in 4:14.

Favorite speedrunning demo(s) from yourself (the one(s) that you're most proud of)?
Someday, I will get an Id record. That will be the record I am most proud of. I am proud of my 0:22.69 E1M1 demo, as well as my 0:07.97 E2M1 demo. I am also proud of my hobby runs and projects I have made, including all of the miscellaneous trick demos I have done (see some links below). I am proud of my hdn_er_020, hdn_nr_021, fr3n1m3_er_036, dam100_er_020, and warehaus_er_056, regardless of how much they will be improved. I have also submitted a few demos for the other demos section of SDA. I am proud of my e4m1_er_038, e1m8_er_048, and (hopefully optimal) e1m7_er_018. I suppose you can add whatever I have submitted to the bunnyhopping comparison page.

e1m6_048, e3m2_052, e4m3_118, e4m7_048, id1_1346, and id1_1950 by Connor Fitzgerald

Wow. Long list. I have seen probably seen every Id record, and I like them all very much. It is hard to list demos when you think they all deserve recognition. I may have forgot some demos, but this list is good for now.

Favorite player (overall/runs/100%/marathon/coop)?
I like Markus Taipale for his smoothness and fast bunnyhopping (especially for 1999) and execution of tricks. I like Jozsef Szalontai for his stylish and fast bunnyhopping. I like Thomas Stubgaard for his constant smooth aim and ability to survive any level. I like Connor Fitzgerald for his distinctive style. Martin Selinus makes amazing marathons. Arturo Garcia Lasca has a keen eye for optimization. Kay Bernsten bunnyhops insanely fast. Mathias Thore and Robert Maglic for having "free" and very smooth motion when bunnyhopping and for MMdQQ. Michael Hudson is also mad with his Rogue demos. Ilkka Kurkela for taking the time down in many levels with the introduction of bunnyhopping. Ingmar Poerner for taking on a solo nightmare run. Jaakko Alakopsa for breaking the speedrunning record for making as many records as fast as possible. Last (but not least), Jaakko and Alexsander Osipov for THoS.

Favorite trick in a demo?
Any demo listed above contains some sort of trick that I like. I like double rocket jumps, and Peter Horvath's msrj_009 contest entry demo was truly an inspiration for me. The grenade and double rocket jump to wall rocket jump I do in trick79.dem (see above link) was fun to do. Also, any double ogre grenade jump is fascinating to watch.

Favorite QdQ release?
I like them all, but QdQwav was incredible when I first saw it. I liked the uniqueness and humor in DotG, particularly.

Favorite original Quake map?
E1M1, E1M3, E1M5, E2M1, E2M4, E3M1, E3M2, E3M5, E3M6, E4M1, E4M2, E4M3, E4M4, E4M5, and E4M7. Basically just about any map where there are shortcuts.

Favorite custom map?
Dmitry Manslay's msrj.bsp is probably my favorite. Generally any map with a good combination of bunnyhopping and boosting is good for me. I get frustrated with maps that have a lot of monsters on it and have odd ceilings and ledges where I get stuck a lot. Maps with narrow corriders are also a pet peeve of mine.

Most annoying monster/map?
I really do not find the dog or scrag very useful. I really do not find any maps annoying, but E3M7 does occasionally get on my nerves (something about a lot of monsters and narrow corriders, I am sure). :)

Do you like Doom/Quake2/Q3A?
I have played all three and I like them all.

What do you think of Quake now?
The best and only game I currently play.

Quake Purity Test score? link
"You answered "yes" to 41 of 132 questions, with a total value of 42 points out of 141, making you 70.2% quake pure (29.8% quake corrupt)."
