Jesse van Dijk

General Information

You live in (city & country)?
Currently I'm living in Delft, The Netherlands.
I'm looking for a place in Amsterdam at the moment though.

Your birthdate (or age)?
24 yrs

Your occupation/job/studies?
I'm finishing the last courses at the University of
Technology to finally receive my master's degree in
Industrial Design Engineering.

Your hobbies?
It sounds weird, but that depends on the season. In the summer, I usually do little else than sit behind the comp or read books and go out at nights. However, somewhere during the last week in september, the icespeedskating rinks in Holland open for the winter, and that's when I quit drinking, partying and computing and invest all my free time in trainings for a period of about 7 months. Speedskating is definitly _the_ one thing for me. During summer, other activities include drawing, 3D-modelling, and level design.

Your music taste?
Drum 'n' Bass is by far my favorite genre. Sometimes I listen to jazz too, and I've got quite a few classical records as well.

Anything you want to add here (about yourself)?
Yes kids, be aware that speedrunning is very RSI-sensitive. Running for multiple hours is bad for your health, believe me, I know.

Quake-related Information

Your nickname (story behind it)?
'Compsognathus', or simply 'Compy'
I'm an avid fan of the Jurassic Park movies, believe it or not. The Compsognathus was the first dino to appear in the second movie. It was about the size of a chicken, heh.

Your Quake config (key bindings, etc.)?
Forward - W
Strafe left - A
Strafe Right - D
Back - L Alt
Jump - Space
Mlook - Trackball. Yes, honestly.
Fire - L button
Next weapon - R button

Size of Quake directory on your HD?
About 2.5 G. It's stuffed with mods, levels, mission packs, and tools for levels.
All the Quakesource binaries and the mods that belong to that take up quite some space too.

Your computer (processor/videocard etc.)?
P200 32M 4MB Mystique + 4MB VooDoo1

Quake settings (resolution, version etc.)?
I always play in software 320 x 200 because all the cool runners do that :)
gLevel design mostly in GL, especially now that I'm working with coloured lighting.

First contact to speedrunning (when, how etc.)?
I bought an issue of PC Gamer because it had a preview article about Quake 2 in it. To get its readers in the mood for another Quake installment, the magazine supplieda few popular Quake 1 mods on the coverdisk. Among those was a demo called all_1949 which had me hooked instantly. I soon started my own custom level speedrunning site NederSPEED (http://www.student.io.tudelft.nl/io208340/nspeed) after which I soon joined SDA. About two years after getting that coverdisk I released RDE, a missionpack specially for speedrunning.

First speedrunning demo?
I really can't remember. Probably a run on one of the IKSPQ maps I'd say.

Favorite speedrunning demo(s) from yourself (the one(s) that you're most proud of)?
Err...I don't have too many choices :). Actually I think it's the 6-player coop of RD1M4. Even though I don't play in the demo (it was one of the few moments that I was sleeping at SpeedCon) I still made a 'contribution' to the demo :)

Favorite speedrunning demo(s) from others?
There's SO much to mention. What's so cool about speedrunning that runs on the same level get improved over and over, and loads of new tricks are invented to go faster. I feel that's whats so good about speedrunning - not one single run. Sure, Marcus' run from QdQwav on e1m3 was stunning, but what about the demos from Perkele, Yonatan, and Will on that level?? Each of them had me thinking 'how the f*ck is this possible!?!?' So I don't think it's quite fair to appoint a demo and say this is the best. However, I've tried and this is result.

E1M3_024 by Marcus. Coolest route ever, period. Credits for this run also to Perkele, Yon, and Will.
E1M3_100 by Peter. OMFG. Best playing I've ever seen in any game, period.
E1M4_019 by Ilkka. Funkiest trick ever. Shouts also to Black_Out, I think he came up with the trick.
E1M1_023 by Marcus. Best bunnies I've ever seen.
RDEnd_116 by Ilkka. This is personal :)

Favorite player (overall/runs/100%/marathon/coop)?
The people that were at SpeedCon, those are the Coolest Players :)

Favorite trick in a demo?
I like the E1M3 jump a lot. The Skillz test 4 reel was amazing, I'd never thought there'd be so many ways to do it. I loved Evan's demo too, in which he bounced the grenade off the wall.

Favorite QdQ release?
Quake done Quicker (in 16:35) and the ST4 Reel.

Favorite original Quake map?
E1M3. See above.

Favorite custom map?
1. Mexx 9
2. Zerstörer
3. Nehahra
4. DaMaul 6
5. EFDM12

Most annoying monster/map?
I hate both the Spawn and E4M2. Sandy Petersen Suxx0rz at Quake level design :)

Do you like Doom/Quake2/Q3A?
Yes! I started playing Doom on the mac, that was pure thrill. I have never been frightened again sitting behind the computer after I finished Doom; nothing comes even close when comes to 'scariness' (well, Zerstörer perhaps). Quake 2 never really did it for me. I liked all the Gothic stuff from Quake. Q3A? On a P200? :)

What do you think of Quake now?
I'm surprised at how much fun I keep having from the same game. I suppose it's partially because my comp can't run any of the newer games, but Quake still is the very best game I've ever played. By far, mind you.

Quake Purity Test score? link
61.0 %

Anything else you want to add here?
I'd like to say cheers to all the people I've met through Quake. Being part of the speedrunning community means a lot to me. SpeedCon is awesome. I have much respect for all the people that have invested loads and loads of time in the speedrunning-scene in order to keep it alive, in particular Mr. Pflug. Finally, hold tight Ilkq, only a few months to go! :)
