SDA speedrunning Championship 2003 : Contest Three

  1. The contest is being run on this map. Original map by someone at Id, adapted for speedrunning by Basil "What abuot my speling?" de Vries.

  2. All four disciplines are once again being contested. Easy Run, Easy 100%, Nightmare Run and Nightmare 100%.

  3. The Winner in each category will be the person who exits in the fastest time.

  4. Name your files in this format: c3_er/eh/nr/nh_yourname.dem, c3_er/eh/nr/nh_yourname.txt. For example, a nightmare run demo might be called c3_nr_richard.dem

  5. Entries should be sent to sda_contest@planetquake.com, not the regular SDA e-mail address. Any mail sent to this address should generate an automatic reply informing you we have received your demos. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE A REPLY THEN CHANCES ARE WE HAVEN'T RECEIVED YOUR DEMO! If this is the case then either try again, catch one of us on ICQ, go to our IRC channel or post something on the Message Board.

  6. All standard rules apply.

  7. Deadline is Midnight CET, Sunday July 6th 2003.

  8. Any questions or queries, mail us.

  9. Good luck and happy running!

Well, where to start? The field was split between those that could do very difficult Ogre-Grenade Jumps (Peter, Joe, Marv, Robert and Anders) and those that couldn't. But it was an absolutely stunning curling-reverse-double-ogre-grenade jump straight into the exit from Peter Horvath that took first place by nearly two seconds from Jozsef Szalontai, who managed to edge out Martin Selinus by the narrowest of margins. Now I remember why we used to call Peter "The Devil Himself". Special mention to Robert Axelsson who managed to do the jump using only one pixel-perfect OG jump. "Jokus Horlinus" was disqualified from every category for using an obviously false ridiculous name. :-)

Congratulations once again to Martin Selinus who held off a determined challenge from Weixing Ye to take this discipline. Martin used (I think) the only grenade boost in all the EH demos to save him that vital second to take the win. Big praise to Ivan Vladev who took third place, his best result so far!

Results : Nightmare Run

RANK PLAYER TIME CP
01. Timo Neiminen 0:13.36 15

10. Arturo Garcia Lasca 0:23.57 1
11. Michael Hudson 0:23.77 1
12. Adam Terwilligar 0:28.67 1

Once again the top four places went to OG Jumpers, with all four doing very different jumps. But Timo Nieminen's inspired "suicidal charge" jump took the win from Robert Axelsson's reprise of the ER, Jozsef Szalontai's long distance double and Basil de Vries's start-ogre coaxing. A great battle all round.

In a reverse of the Easy 100%, this time it was Weixing Ye that forced out Martin Selinus to take the victory and the 15 points. The two of them ended up well clear of the rest of the field with Robert Axelsson being the fastest of the also-rans. The hazards of close-quarter grenade work in tight corridors was very evident in this discipline. :-)

So that's contest #3 of the 2003 Championship out of the way. Congratulations to Peter, Timo, Martin and Weixing on their wins. And a huge thanks to everyone who participated: It's great to see so many people entering into the spirit of the contest and sending their demos in, even if they know they're not going to be in the top three.

It's also nice to see Joe and Peter taking part again, and even if they don't enter every contest I hope we'll be seeing them again in the future.

We'll be back very soon with another contest, keep watching!

For how this changes things on the leader board, take a look HERE later today or tomorrow. At the time of posting these results I haven't had time to update it yet. Sorry, but it takes hours I haven't got hours today. :-/

The winning demos are available HERE and, finally, all demos can be downloaded HERE.
